March Newsletter for The Place
Gift of Prom reached an exciting milestone this year as we served 98 students across Forsyth and Dawson counties - our largest number ever.
What began seven years ago as a small effort to ensure that every student can experience the joy of prom has grown significantly, from serving just 23 students in 2022 to 98 in 2026. This year’s record participation reflects both the growing need in our community and the generosity of our donors and volunteers who make this event possible.
Thanks to remarkable community support, our boutique was stocked more abundantly than ever.
This year we received donations of 254 dresses, 52 tuxedos and men’s formalwear pieces, 103 pairs of shoes, 118 pieces of jewelry, and 136 makeup items. Combined with our existing inventory, we began the event with over 500 dresses, giving every student a wide range of options and styles to choose from.
The abundance also allowed us to share resources with partner agencies, including Blessed Hope, Epic Prom, and White County.
The heart of Gift of Prom is always found in the personal moments, and this year brought many. One volunteer, Charlene, described her experience as “the most rewarding” she has had, sharing how meaningful it was to help teens find outfits that made them smile with pride.
Charlene also recounted a touching side story: after talking about Gift of Prom with a cashier she sees regularly at Publix, the cashier, Tandy, decided to volunteer as well, and the two ended up joyfully working the same shift. These small connections reflect the spirit of community that keeps the program growing.
Another volunteer, Jean from the Forsyth County Junior Service League, shared the story of a student who had never worn a dress to a dance before.
After exploring several jewel-toned options and laughing with her mom through the process, the student found a black dress that made her feel confident and beautiful. Even then, she hesitated, worried about taking something someone else might want.
Jean encouraged her to choose what made her feel special, reminding her that she was the focus of the day. The student ultimately selected the dress along with jewelry and a vibrant red purse, leaving with a smile that Jean described as absolutely unforgettable.
These stories, paired with the dedication of volunteers, logistics team, staff, and the extraordinary generosity of donors, are what make Gift of Prom so impactful. Beyond providing dresses and suits, the program gives students memories of being celebrated, valued, and supported.
Thank you to everyone who contributed time, resources, or care to make this year the most successful Gift of Prom yet.
Your support truly changes lives and creates lasting moments these students will carry with them far beyond prom night.
