Top 10 Most Requested Pantry Items

At The Place, our food pantry is a vital resource for families across Forsyth and Dawson Counties. Food donations play a key role in helping us serve our community and keep our shelves stocked with essentials.

We’re often asked what items are most needed, so we’ve created a list of our Top 10 most requested pantry items to help guide your generous donations.

  1. Tuna/chicken pouches.  These are a great source of protein.  Unlike canned goods, pouches don’t require a can opener, which makes them more accessible for someone who may not have access to a kitchen.  They’re also lightweight and easier to store.

  2. Protein shakes and bars. Protein shakes and bars are an excellent source of protein while combining convenience and nutrition.

  3. Flour/sugar/cooking oil/salt/pepper (pantry staples).  These pantry staples are always requested by clients as they are essential in cooking and preparing meals.

  4. Hygiene items.  Hygiene items such as shampoo, toilet paper, body wash, and laundry detergent are often overlooked as pantry staples, but these items are always in need.

  5. Canned vegetables.  Canned vegetables are nutritious and do not require refrigeration, which makes it a great pantry staple.

  6. Baby food.   Babies have specific dietary needs, so donating items like formula and baby food help fill that gap for caregivers.

  7. Canned beans.  Beans are highly nutritious and packed with protein, fiber, iron and other essential nutrients making them a great meat substitute as well.

  8. Rice.  Rice is a staple in almost every pantry.  It has a long shelf life and works well for many types of cuisines making this a popular pantry item.

  9. Hamburger Helper.  Hamburger Helper is a great way to stretch protein and can turn limited ingredients into a complete meal.

  10. Mac and Cheese cups.  Perfectly portioned, single-serve mac and cheese cups are convenient and are great for people who may not have access to a full kitchen.

While our food pantry is grateful for every donation, here are a few important guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Opened food items cannot be accepted. For safety reasons, anything that has been opened must be discarded and cannot be distributed.

  • Please avoid items with damaged packaging or significant dents, as these may not be safe to provide.

  • While it may seem obvious, we kindly ask that you do not donate expired food items.
